This residence located in the San Francisco bay area of California, is set on a gently sloping 2 acre parcel above a small creek. The owners desired an outdoor space that combined areas for a variety of active pursuits, with enough space to entertain frequently large groups of friends and family. On the main level nearest the house two trellises were built to provide dining and gathering. For the chef there is a complete outdoor kitchen providing a platform for the preparation of a casual meal or an elegant dinner. The adjacent pavilion includes a soaring stone fireplace within a warm cedar wood framework that provides a warm and inviting place for diners to gather once the meal is done. As one descends the steps that lead to the lawn a look to the right yields views of the tennis court on the lower terrace. The surrounding slopes and planters are filled with flowering species and trees that explode into color in the spring and provide a spectacular display in the autumn months. Further on, the lawn gives way to a putting green and a path that leads visitors to the garden that winds around the creek at the far end of the property. The installation of a low planted berm and a meandering dry creek that covers a diversion system has solved the yearly problem of floods. This yard has been turned from a collection of unusable spaces into an open and inviting place that beckons visitors to enjoy gracious outdoor living and also provides the owners of this beautiful property with a sanctuary from the pressures of daily life.
