Is it possible to have multiple area units in the plant schedule for groundcovers or shrub areas as shown below. or is this something that needs to be done manually?

There is not a way with the automatic schedule options to have 2 units like that.
Your best workflow would be to use the spreadsheet option to export to excel and add an extra column to create a cell calculation for the alternate unit, then import the result back to CAD.
