I am wondering if LandFX Layer State files (.lay) can be used the same way that AutoCAD's (.lst) can be? LandFX layer states can be used as templates to start future, similar projects (i.e. detail.lay, basefile.lay, siteconstruction.lay), but can they be used on a project specific basis?
For instance, I have a set of drawings that will reference the same basefile. I want to create a layer state to be used in all of the drawings associated with that base so that it appears the same way (i.e. line weights, line colors, frozen layers) throughout the drawing set.
Are .lay files capable of this? Or is this something that can only be achivied with .lst files?

The Land F/X Layer States tools is solely concerned with creating layers in the current drawing. So you could use it to set up basic layers in all of your drawings.
However for managing the layers within the xref, you would be better served using AutoCAD's Layer States Manager, and exporting an LAS file into each drawing. Or better yet, with 2018, it is far easier to control the state of an xref's layers, so the recommended procedure there would be to just edit the xref as desired, and then you can easily restore any xref layers to their original state directly in the layer palette.

I'll assume that like us, you're working with an engineer that sends yo updates and rather than going through the updated bases every time you get them you just want an easy and fast way to have them conform to your color/pen settings. If so, here's how we do it:
After saving the layer states as Amanda suggests above, you can open a new drawing and just be sure to import the layer state BEFORE you bring the revised base as an exploded block. Then just saveas and step on the original revised civil or architectural base (or hopefully a copy of the originally transmitted drawing). Then your revised base will have all of the imported layers set to the correct pen settings.
I hope that this helps.

Yes, Land F/X Layer States (saved to those .lay files under LandFX\layers\), can recall the same layer with the same details (name, colour, lineweight, linetype, plot status) for every project it's brought into.

Note that layer states are not dynamic, if this is what you meant by having it on a project specific basis. What is the exact scenario you're trying to accomplish with the layers being linked to the base, so I know how best to answer that part of your question? Land F/X layer states do not work like AutoCAD Layer States. Those just change the properties of layers, but don't add or manage them otherwise. Ours work more like the Design Centre, but faster and already organized into types of layers.
I'll ask around tomorrow, but I'm not familiar with a .lst file type in order to speak to that. Did you mean a different file type?
