Our software includes a utility for editing your layer information in one dialog box. Available from the General Preferences, the Edit Layer dialog box consolidates several layer properties into one easy-to-configure location. Here, you can make a number of selections to customize layers that contain specific objects (such as pipe sleeves or electric lines) as they appear in your drawings.
This feature is designed to allow you to edit the name and appearance of specific objects that appear on selected layers. For example, if you want a label to appear in a different color, lineweight, or linetype, you would make those changes here. We also have features designed to:
- Change the Land F/X line colors to match your office standards. This feature affects the 256 available colors in which the default Land F/X line colors can appear.
- Change the layer colors – a global configuration of the colors in which all layers will appear in the drawing you currently have open.
Edit Layer Overview
Open the General Preferences:
F/X Admin ribbon
Any of the F/X pull-down menus (F/X Admin, F/X Graphics, F/X Planting, F/X Irrigation, or F/X Details)
or type *FXPreferences in the Command line
The Preferences dialog box will open. Make sure the General option is selected.
Select a layer in the Layers area. Then click Edit to open the Edit Layer dialog box, where you can edit the properties of the selected layer.
The Edit Layer Dialog Box
1. This field displays the name of the layer. If you want, you can change the layer name here.
We strongly recommend that you do not change the layer names.
2. This menu displays the layer color and allows you change the color of the layer to meet your office standards.
3. This menu displays the linetype of the selected layer and allows you to change the layer linetype (e.g., continuous, dashed, etc.).
4. This menu displays the lineweight of the selected layer and allows you to set a new lineweight if you want.
We strongly recommend leaving the lineweights as is, since lineweights should be configured through a CTB plotting file.
5. Plot: Check this box to make the selected layer a plot layer (that is, a layer that plots). Uncheck this box to make the layer a non-plot layer.
6. This field provides a description of the objects and functions in your drawing that will be stored on this layer by default.
Editing a Layer Name
The top field in the Edit Layer dialog box contains the name of the selected layer.
Type your preferred layer name here, and click OK to save the change.
Land F/X software follows a strict layer-naming convention that follows the CAD layer name guidelines. Although you are free to rename the layers as you see fit, it's a good idea to understand the logic behind the existing layer names and our reasons behind setting them up this way. Changing a Layer Color
Use the top menu to set a new color for the selected layer.
All objects stored on the layer will appear in the selected color when placed in your drawings.
You can now select a Truecolor for a layer.

Changing a Layer Linetype
Use the middle menu to select a linetype for the selected layer.
To populate this menu with a full selection of available linetypes, you may need to reload your linetypes.
Changing a Layer Lineweight
Use the bottom menu to set a lineweight for the selected layer.
We've selected the default Land F/X layer lineweights carefully. We strongly recommend not changing the lineweights of the default Land F/X layers.
Setting a Layer to Plot or Non-Plot
The Edit Layer dialog box also includes a checkbox that allows you to determine whether or not the selected layer will plot.
Checking the Plot box (as in the example shown below) will set the layer to plot, meaning it will be visible when you print your drawing.
Leaving this box unchecked will make the layer a non-plot layer, meaning it will be visible in your drawing on screen but not when you plot.
Saving Your Layer Settings
When finished configuring the selected layer, click OK to save your settings.
