This article will show you how to and work with a Land F/X project that has already been created. To start a new project, see our Create a New Project article.
You may feel tempted to open an existing project and rename it, rather than simply opening a new project. DO NOT DO THIS. Renaming existing projects with the intention of retaining their properties for a new project can cause a number of file issues. If you want to create a new project with similar properties to an existing project, save the existing project as a template. Then open a new project based on that template. For more information, see our Templates page.
The Land F/X Projects Dialog Box
To open an existing project, open our Projects tool:
F/X Admin ribbon, Project List button
or type FX_ProjectFiles in the Command line
F/X Admin pull-down menu
The Land F/X Projects dialog box will open.
Project List Tab
1. Click the Project List tab to see all available Land F/X projects that have been created in your office.
2. Click the Organization tab to see which of your projects do not currently have a detail folder assignment, are marked as Read-Only, or have been saved as templates. More information
3. When you have the Project List tab selected, you'll see a list of all available Projects in this area.
4. Highlight a project and click Open to open that project.
5. Click New to start a new project. For more information, see our Create a New Project page.
6. Highlight a project and click Edit to open the Project Manager and make changes to that project.
7. Highlight a project and click Delete to delete that project.
8. Click Backup to back up your project. (See our documentation on backing up projects).
9. Click Restore to restore, download, or import a project.(See our documentation on restoring projects).
10. Click Report to print a list of all your projects.
11. Highlight a project and click Save as Template to save that project as a template. More information page.
When you open a project with a drawing file also open, the project will become associated with that drawing, meaning you can complete actions such as placing plants and irrigation equipment from the project into the current drawing. If you save the drawing, the selected project will automatically become the current project whenever you re-open that drawing.
What's all this about "projects" and "drawings"? A Land F/X project, or LFX file, is a separate entity from a CAD drawing, or DWG file. For an explanation of how projects and drawings work together, see our CAD Drawings and Land F/X Projects page.

Organization Tab
The Project Organization tab displays a list of projects broken down into specific designations.
1. Unassigned Projects: Projects designated as Unassigned Projects do not currently have a detail folder assignment.
2. This list shows projects that are currently marked as Read-Only. More information
3. Projects in this area are currently designated as Read Only. More information
4. Projects in this area have been saved as templates. More information

Reorganizing Detail Folders
We've added the capability of reorganizing your Detail Library by simply moving detail folders around in the Organization tab.
We highly recommend starting this effort with a small or test project, and then confirm that all is well. This operation can potentially cause a host of problems, so proceed with caution. However, assuming that all details in the project are still valid and none are currently open, the system will move and rename all relevant details and their references to reflect the reorganization.
If you drag a project detail folder into another folder, you'll be prompted to confirm how many folders and details you're about to move.
Click Yes to move the folder, or click No to cancel.
Note that the process will fail if you move a detail folder in an unsupported way, including:
Attempting more than four levels of folder hierarchy
Duplicating folder names
Moving a folder into itself
You can move a folder to the main project organization level, making it a primary-level folder.
This feature is not currently available for standard folders or the Detail Explorer.
Opening a Project
To open an existing project, highlight the project in the Land F/X Projects dialog box, then click Open.
The Project Manager for the selected project will open. The Project Manager contains a number of important settings for your project. For more information, see our Project Manager page.
If the settings are to your liking, click OK to open the project and begin working.
You can open the Project Manager at any time and adjust these settings as needed.
Order Project List by Number or Name
We've added the capability to order your projects by either number or name.
Each of these columns has a clickable header in the Land F/X Projects dialog box. Click either the Number or Name header to sort your projects by number or name.
Generating a Report of All Your Projects
To create a report, or list, of all your projects, click Report.
Select a destination for your report:
- Drawing: Place the report in your drawing.
- Table: Place the report in your drawing in table format.
- Spreadsheet: Export the report to a spreadsheet using a program such as MS Excel.
Click OK to generate your report.
Projects and Preference Sets
Our six Preferences screens provide a centralized way to customize everything from fonts and label styles to layer colors. Once you've congifured your Preferences the way you want them, you can save those settings in what's known as a Preference Set. You can create as many Preference Sets as you need – one for each client, each type of project, each consultant you work with, etc.
For more information about Preference Sets, see our Preference Sets page.
When you open a project, you should get into the habit of making sure you have the correct Preference Set assigned to that project, or set as active. When you start working in a drawing with a project open, the active Preference Set will govern the appearance of fonts, layer colors, label styles, and any other settings that are configured and saved within that Preference Set. That's why it's extremely important to have the correct Preference Set active.
To set a Preference Set as active, just open any of the six Preferences screens and select it from the menu pictured to the right. You can then close the Preferences and start working on your project.
Note that your installation comes with our two default Preference Sets – Imperial and Metric (one for each measurement system you're likely to use).
However, if your office creates a large number of Preference Sets, you'll have a longer list of Preference Sets to choose from.
Important: When you open or create a project, the first Preference Set in alphabetical order will be set active by default. If you have one Preference Set that you anticipate using most often, you might think about giving it a name that puts it first alphabetically. That way, that Preference Set will always be set active by default and you won't have to worry about selecting one each time you open or create a project.
Back Up and Restore Projects
For information and instructions for backing up and recovering projects, see our documentation on backing up and restoring projects.
Working With AutoCAD Sheet Sets
Our software allows you to use AutoCAD Sheet Sets to establish and maintain your sheets. For more information, visit our Working With Sheet Sets page.
Disassociating a Drawing from a Project
In some cases, a drawing may become locked into a project, so to speak. Follow our steps to disassociate a drawing from a project.
Changing the Project Associated With Multiple DWG Files
You have a large job that spans dozens, if not hundreds, of DWG files. You need to change the Land F/X project number associated with these files.
Possible reasons for this change include:
- Splitting off the drawing set as a revision
- Handing off the drawing set to a partner
For instructions, see our article on changing the project association (Project Number) across multiple DWG files.
