Irrigation Theory & Terminology
An irrigation system needs to include the following components:
- A source for your water that provides the flow and pressure that is appropriate for the needs or your distribution.
- A mainline piped distribution system to individual valves.
- Valves that are controlled automatically with controllers, or manually, so that they activate a series of sprinklers or drip emitters with a lateral piping system.
- Pipes sized so that the water flow velocity is at acceptable limits to reduce wear and lengthen service life.
- Sprinkler head or drip emitter selection that is appropriate to provide an even distribution of water and in an amount that allows you to apply enough water for the time limitations you may have for watering.
