Lock Standard and Project Details from Editing
Issue
If you have an organized detail library with the Land F/X tools, you might want to introduce some locks to prevent new users in the office from accidentally editing and overwriting the wrong details.
Solution
You have a few options that allow you to control who's able to edit details:
Option 1: Use a Preference Set By-User permission to lock your standard details
You can grant specific permissions to each user in your office for reading and writing (editing) details. Users with Read/Write permission can edit and overwrite standard details. Users who only have Read permission will only be able to add standard details to their project and place them on sheets, but not edit them unless they create a project-specific copy for themselves.
Caveat: This method only works if:
- You're using the standard detail CSI system, or
- You've edited the standard detail CSI system using the Custom (offline) Folder setting in the Detail Preferences. This standard folder list only allows 2-digit numbers for the folders – not letters.
Option 2: Lock your detail divisions (if you've created your own custom standards folder)
If you've created your own custom standards folder with lettered divisions within the regular Details section, you'll need to lock these divisions using a Windows folder and file permissions lock. Lock any standard folders through the Windows File Explorer for your Details folder manually. This option will have the same effect as above and will only allow users with Write permission to edit a detail.
Option 3: Use project By-User permissions to lock project details
If a project is assigned to a project detail folder and the permissions for that project are set to By-User in the Project Manager, only those with Write access will be able to edit and overwrite the details in that linked folder.
Users with only Read permission for that project will only be able to save the detail as a copy with a new number elsewhere (their own new project, for example).
This option will help reinforce the standard for new users to not directly link to another project's details and to instead make their own copy in their own project's detail folder.
