2025 ASLA Workshop: 3D to Details

Workshop

3D to Details: Modeling in SketchUp and AutoCAD for Detail Creation

Location:

Rivergate Room, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, ASLA 2025 Conference

Time:

October 10, 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Description:

The need to level up your SketchUp skills is more pressing than ever! Over the course of 2 hours, we will cover the basics of terrain creation, creating site and planting components into your design, and sending your design back over to AutoCAD. From there, we’ll move on to the creation of details with the goal of producing a submittable construction detail set.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to navigate basic native tools in SketchUp that are essential for terrain modeling and designing items such as components/groups that can be used for creating details in CAD.
  • Understand the benefits of using native tools and plugins to minimize the SketchUp learning curve and reduce time spent creating a design.
  • Learn how to build terrain from CAD linework, and prepare a final scene in SketchUp to create a working detail of a portion of the design.

Recommended Skills:

  • Any skill in SketchUp, as well as access to SketchUp before and after the bootcamp.
  • Any use of SketchUp terrain modeling and terrain plugins recommended but not required.
  • Some experience with drafting plans in AutoCAD, and the connection between saving a CAD plan and exporting it to SketchUp.
  • Possible use of Civil 3D or Revit recommended but not required.

We'll provide everything you need!

Land F/X is hosting these workshops, and like a good host we'll handle everything you need. That includes laptops, mice, and all the necessary software. All you have to do is show up! Room capacity will exceed the number of laptops we'll have available. We want all to attend who are interested, so if you can bring your own laptop with the featured software already installed, we ask that you do so and still enjoy all our other provided goodies!

Students at past learning labs using Land F/X provided laptops.

The workshops go well with coffee!
