I have some questions about plant block customization and planting layers. I would like my existing trees in my planting plan to be screened back or gray and my proposed trees in my planting plan to be full burn. When inserting shrubs and trees the linework is all on the same layer. I can adjust the plant linework color by changing the LK layers but that effects the whole drawing.

Is there a way to adjust the plant block linework so we can have plants plot differently in the same drawing?

I have attached an image of what we would like the plants to plot like. In the drawing you can see the existing plants a screened back while the existing plants are full burn.
Amanda,

We do have some symbols saved into the system pre-made for existing plants.
Open Generic Plants under the F/X Planting ribbon. Choose the remediation category. All of these symbols have different LK layers.
Generic Plant Symbols

You can also create new versions of our plant blocks where the LK- layers are entirely different. Take one of our blocks in a blank drawing and explode it. Rename the linework layers in that new drawing by adding an -EX to the layers (for existing). Save the block as a new plant symbol, then use that for your existing trees. With the linework on a differently named layer, you can change its layer settings differently from your proposed plants.

Amanda,

Thank you for getting back to me. We would like to keep the smart block capabilities for plants. When you explode the block it is not longer a smart object, is that correct?

The second link you provided says blocks can be set to layer "0" instead of the LK layers. Would this be a good solution so the blocks can retain their smart capabilities?

Thanks, Amanda
Amanda,

The exploding was a step before saving the symbol back to our system, so you could use it for generic plants or the plant manager. They both access the same library of saved blocks. You'll see the remediation symbols when assigning a 2D symbol to a tree as well.

It's not recommended to draw anything on layer 0. You'll lose hierarchy of lineweight in plant symbols. It can be done, but it's a shortcut and not a best practice. It's better to use a different symbol, different symbol name entirely by creating a new version of the block, saving it into the Land F/X system by following the steps on the "Add New Plant Symbols" page above.

Is there a requirement that the existing plants be in the same drawing?
Because by far the easiest solution is to keep the existing plants in the xref base, where you can easily screen them back.
