For larger irrigation systems, I usually draw in a preliminary mainline as a polyline. Is there a way to convert an existing polyline into a LAFX mainline?

We don't have an ability to convert a polyline to pipe.
But if you draw your preliminary mainline on the LI-PIPE-MAIN-NPLT layer, the draw mainline tool will automatically toggle it off and on for you, and in conjunction with the T keyboard command to toggle other visible layers, you can typically follow the preliminary line very quickly.
