why don't you have or is there a way to do linear take-offs in estimating so it comes in as part of the schedule?

You can do this via RefNotes by assigning Length items to layers.
It currently comes in a different schedule, but that schedule can include things such as Mulch, Gravel, Tree Grates, Trash Cans, and so on. We do have plans to be able to include RefNote items in the Planting and Irrigation schedules later this year.
