Is there a way to get the pipe size label block to insert at the center of the pipe?
no lasso, just a single block denoting size.

If you do not want the lasso attached to the pipe label, there is a newer feature in preferences that will allow the toggle of the lasso/no lasso when sizing pipes. Further, you can use the pipe label tool and move labels as needed, and even remove the lasso with the "R" keyboard command.
